Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S., responsible for approximately one in five cancer deaths.[1] Though lung cancer rates are high, the national rate of lung cancer screening remains low, at under 6%. Patients have a 20-year survival rate of 80% when cancer is caught in its early stages, compared to a five-year survival rate of 8% for late-stage lung cancer.[2][3]

In recent years, mobile lung cancer screening has emerged as a crucial way to screen and diagnose lung cancer in rural and underserved communities, ultimately improving access to care and treatment outcomes.

STS is committed to supporting innovative screening initiatives such as mobile lung cancer units through various means. This online toolkit is designed for those who are interested in developing or expanding their institution’s lung cancer screening programs using mobile units. Engaging in this vital work starts at the individual physician level, where each healthcare provider can play a role in advocating for and implementing screening programs. STS encourages physicians to utilize available resources for mobile lung cancer screening initiatives.
