As Lung Cancer Awareness Month begins, it’s important to reflect on the significant efforts made by STS over the past year to advocate for improved lung cancer outcomes and raise awareness. Key initiatives have included:

Mobile Lung Cancer Screening Initiative: STS is working with institutions nationwide to assist in securing funding and operational support for new mobile lung cancer screening units. These units will enhance patients' access to care in rural and underserved communities.

Coverage Guidelines: In partnership with the American College of Radiology® and the GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer, STS has urged Medicare and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) to update their coverage guidelines and expand the number of high-risk individuals eligible for lung cancer screening.

Medicaid Coverage Without Barriers: STS has advocated for legislation requiring state Medicaid programs to cover lung cancer screenings for eligible enrollees, expand tobacco cessation coverage, and eliminate prior authorization requirements for screenings.

Focus on Women with Lung Cancer: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women, disproportionately affecting those who have never smoked. STS is working with policymakers to address this disparity in care and outcomes.

Medical Research: STS has advocated for increased funding for medical research on lung cancer, including support for the federal Lung Cancer Research Program. This funding is essential for driving innovation and improving treatment options.

Engagement with Key Government Agencies: To advance advocacy efforts, STS has collaborated with key agencies, including the White House Cancer Moonshot and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

As this month of awareness unfolds, STS’s commitment to championing these critical issues continues, striving for greater investment, treatment, and improved outcomes for lung cancer.
